BILNAS

The British Institute for Libyan and North African Studies (BILNAS) is one of nine British International Research Institutes. Its role is to open doors to the treasures of an extraordinary region: home to UNESCO world heritage sites and amazing stories of discovery and endeavour.

As BILNAS approaches its 60th anniversary in 2029, its vision is to invite more researchers, writers, students and amateur enthusiasts to become part of a global community dedicated to sharing the incredible cultural assets of Libya and North Africa. Over the next three years, the charity will be looking to build engagement and strengthen its activities, by diversifying income streams and becoming more financially sustainable.

“We’re delighted to have been appointed to help BILNAS plan for growth and become a more resilient, more ambitious organisation,” says Gifted’s Chief Executive, Amy Stevens. “The goal is to devise a fundraising strategy that will greatly increase current income and over time grow to raise at least £500,000 a year from individual givers, corporate sponsors and grant makers.”

Welcoming researchers, scholars and lovers of cultural heritage

BILNAS wants to extend the warmest of welcomes to anyone captivated by a region that has always been the focus of human civilisation and development. Libya alone has five archaeological sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List and its story encompasses a much older record of human activity.

“The BILNAS landscape is jaw-dropping,” says Amy. “The wealth of architectural gems and the cultural heritage they represent make them an ideal focus for major funding for the right donors across different income streams. Whether that’s about showcasing heritage crafts, investing in open-access publications or catalysing the careers of emerging scholars, the opportunities for targeted philanthropic support are both varied and packed with tangible impact.”
