Brain Tumour Research
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Over 100,000 people in the UK are estimated to be living with a brain tumour or the long-term impact of their diagnosis, yet the disease remains devastatingly underfunded.
Brain Tumour Research is working relentlessly to change this, as the only national charity focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours. Currently, the charity operates six Centres of Excellence across the UK, all of them delivering real innovation. It also supports over 200 researchers and provides enormous inspiration to the brain tumour community in the UK and beyond.
“The scope of the charity’s work is remarkable,” says Gifted’s Director of Innovation, Konna Beeson. “When we were invited to undertake a fundraising strategic review aimed at significantly uplifting annual income, we could see the potential for growth across different revenue streams, especially major gifts.”
Venture philanthropy in action
Rapid advances in science – fuelled by the data and artificial intelligence revolution, breakthroughs in genomics and the rise of personalised medicine – are all transforming how we understand and treat diseases. These shifts herald real opportunities to develop impactful treatments and, ultimately, cures for all types of brain tumours.
“We are at a very exciting juncture,” says Andrew Day. “Brain Tumour Research facilitates the kind of breakthrough science that brings us ever closer to a cure – and they do that, often by providing the vital seed funding that researchers need. This is fertile ground for pioneering venture philanthropy that’s prepared to take risks and be the catalyst for new discoveries and a cure.”
