GACA (Global Agency for Community Acceleration), Kenya

Girls and young women in Kenya face daily humiliation through the widespread lack of access to feminine hygiene products which can have a major impact on their education, health and self-esteem. In response, Gifted is working with GACA (Global Agency for Community Acceleration) on its Menstrual Hygiene Support & Empowerment Campaign.
“GACA is a small NGO with a really important vision to eliminate period poverty in Kenya,” says Gifted’s Chief Executive, Amy Stevens. “It’s a privilege to be supporting the GACA Board in developing their fundraising strategy and making sure potential funders have the evidence they need to invest in the project. Their GoFundMe campaign is now underway to raise the funds for their pilot project and we’re also helping to guide GACA’s website development and other marketing initiatives.”
Pragmatic support and powerful impact
Gaca’s Founder, Jerim Onguru, explains, “As a new NGO in Kenya, fundraising is not an easy challenge. I’m very grateful that Amy saw the value in our Menstrual Hygiene Campaign and chose to join us by offering fundraising support and advice. It gives me hope that others around the world will get behind our projects and help to make a difference too.”
GACA’s campaign aims to tackle the health and education inequalities created by period poverty with increased access to sanitary products, soap (bathing and laundry) and education sessions. Providing and distributing these community-based solutions will help to remove a key barrier to remaining in education. The goal is also to create better physical health by reducing the risk of infection so that young women can go onto make confident contributions to the communities in which they live. The initial roll-out of the project has been a huge success, with Jerim reporting that GACA's work is "already restoring dignity, building confidence and removing the silent shame many girls have carried for too long."
GACA’s mission in Africa
Breaking the poverty bond in Africa, is what drives GACA’s grassroots activities so that young people feel empowered, mobilised and equipped to engage with their communities and make a difference. In Homa Bay County in the West of Kenya where GACA is based, 48% of the local population are living below the poverty line and only 17% of residents are secondary educated.
“The wonderful team at GACA are committed to turning this situation around,” says Amy. “They recognise that providing menstrual hygiene solutions is key to rapidly improving the life chances of 50% of the Homa Bay County population. When their Founder, Jerim Onguru, reached out and asked for help with his project, I just couldn’t say no. I was so inspired by his passion to support girls and young women in his area. And in 2025, no girl should be robbed of an education due to non-existent access to menstrual hygiene products. It is simply not ok.”
