Hull Minster

Investing in music, heritage and the futures of young people.

Hull Minster is the largest parish church in the UK and embraces over 700 years of cultural and spiritual heritage. It also serves one of the most deprived areas in the country through its mission, ministry and outreach work. Like many parish churches, though, it has no dedicated in-house fundraiser to support projects that keep its worshipping and wider community thriving.

“We are really excited about partnering with the church to review its fundraising activity and explore the potential of raising significant sums for the restoration of its historic organ,” says Amy Stevens. “This will be an important part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund bid, to support the Minster’s musical and choral contribution to the city.”

The joyful sound of a city

Organ music has been at the heart of Hull since pre-Reformation times. Over the centuries, the Minster’s organ has been replaced, repaired and expanded, thanks to donors such as William Wilberforce and Benjamin Blades who owned the shipyard that built the Bounty.

More recently, Hull Minster’s musical mission has been key to the success of Choral Hull, an initiative dedicated to starting school choirs from scratch and discovering talented young choristers. “What the Director of Music and the Minster team have achieved with youngsters across the city is incredible,” continues Amy. “Notes of pure joy rang out from the top of the church’s tower when school choirs were brought together for a special May Day concert. A fully restored organ is key to supporting the ambitions of young people like these, as well as preserving the Minster’s living heritage.”
